Analysis of the Use of Red Blood Cell Products for Elective Surgery-A Guide for Mazimum Surgical Blood Order Schedule(MSBOS)

Abstract

|
We investigated the number of red blood cell (RBC) units in various elective surgery car-ried out during the last six months in 1992 to revise the guideline for maximum surgical blood order schedule (MSBOS) at the Seoul National University
Hospital.
Generally, the number of RBCs transfused for major surgery was significantly decreased when compared to our previous reprt of 1933. A guideline for MSBOS was made on the basis of RBC units transfused, mean number of RBC units ordered by surgeons,
and
the previous guideline for MSBOS. 'Type and screen' was recommended for patients who are unlikely to require transfusion and for surgical procedures requiring less than 0.5 unit of RBCs.
